Virtual Resource Room for Journalists Intended to Facilitate More Accurate Reporting on Immigration

(Los Angeles, CA) October 19, 2016 — With immigration as a central issue of this presidential election season, and an issue often mischaracterized and misreported, Define American has launched #FactsMatter, a one-stop online resource for journalists searching for accurate and credible facts about immigration and undocumented immigrants. #FactsMatter lives at, and is organized by clickable links to different subjects, including: “state and local taxes,” “social security,” “economic growth,” “entrepreneurial rate,” “total undocumented population,” “population growth rate,” “region of origin” and “incarceration rate.” Each fact is accompanied by a sharable infographic that illustrates said fact in visual terms.

#FactsMatter’s launch coincides with the day of the final presidential debate, where immigration has been announced as one of the main subjects.

“As I travel across the country engaging Americans of all backgrounds, I’ve come to the conclusion that immigration is the most controversial yet least understood issue in American politics,” said Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Jose Antonio Vargas, founder and CEO of Define American. “That misunderstanding can be directly traced to how most journalists frame the issue. #FactsMatter speaks to the need of more accurately and more humanely covering immigration, which impacts millions of Americans.”

Previously, Define American launched #WordsMatter, a campaign that has been at the forefront of leading hundreds ––including individual journalists, media outlets and other organizations––to pledge not to use the word “illegal” when describing undocumented immigrants.

The launch of #FactsMatter comes on the heels of Define American’s campaign to have Sophie Cruz’s question asked at the second presidential debate on October 9th. Her question was not asked. In fact, no immigration-related question has been asked at a presidential debate thus far.
