Jose Antonio Vargas was not alone during the President’s speech during the joint session of the United States Congress. He was joined by immigrants, activists, concerned citizens who have all be targeted by this administration.
Vargas used fake documents to obtain employment at The Washington Post, where he was part of the team that won part of the Pulitzer Prize for Breaking News Reporting in 2008. Under Trump’s new deportation guidelines, anyone who attempts to further their career, or feed their family could be eligible for removal.
This is not just an attack on the undocumented community. The anti-immigrant lobby has waged a war against facts and common sentiment. Only by standing together, as patriotic Muslim Americans, Black Americans, Latin Americans, Arab Americans, Transgender Americans, and yes – undocumented Americans, can we illustrate how this administration has sought to criminalize minorities and break apart functional, loving communities.
We call on the Department of Homeland Security to release Jose Antonio Vargas immediately.
