Lindsay Horlacher - Define American

Lindsay Horlacher

I am a naturalized U.S. Citizen. My boyfriend of 6 years is an undocumented immigrant from Costa Rica. We plan on getting married and having a family soon. However, that dream– the simple dream of having a family in the country where I was born, is threatened because he can’t become “legal”.

Everyone asks, “why don’t you just get married and then you he can get a green card?” I would’ve done that 6 years ago if it was an option. People don’t know how incredibly difficulty- almost impossible– it is for an undocumented immigrant, even if married to a US Citizen, to get “papers.”

I am inspired by Jose to “come out” with my story– because I am tired of feeling ashamed and fearing what others might think and say. Its time for people to know our stories. Here’s to hoping for more change, so that we may stay here and live out our American dream.

Let's Talk

It's time for a new conversation about immigration in America, and it starts with us.
