Like the Central Americans coming to our borders today, my ancestors first settled in Pennsylvania ten generations ago as refugees from violence and intolerance in Wales and Scotland. As an adult I left my roots in the Midwest to find a new home in New Mexico, only a few miles from the border shared with Mexico. Here we speak of the ideal of land of united cultures. That, in the end is what it means to be an American, a place where we can all live together on shared principles of dignity and freedom in a land of united cultures. Let us act today continue our shared journey together.
